OrangeHRM 8.2 introduces Performance Core as a brand-new module, expands Citra AI from a chat assistant into an analytical layer over your people data, and adds a deeper set of attendance exception rules tied directly to pay policies. Roster gains chart-based reporting and multi-location governance, App Builder becomes a reporting tool in its own right, and the mobile app picks up conversation history in Citra plus fuller attendance and leave support. This post walks through every change in the release and what it means for the people who use OrangeHRM day to day.
Citra AI
Until now, Citra has been the assistant you talk to, apply for leave, check a balance, find out who's out this week. In 8.2, Citra starts doing analysis you would otherwise have to build a report for.
Citra Analytics
Citra can now run analytical work against your employee records instead of just retrieving them. The release covers four areas:
-
Attrition Rate Analysis - understand turnover patterns without exporting data into a spreadsheet first.
-
Missing Employee Information Analysis - surface incomplete records across your PIM data. This is the kind of housekeeping that quietly breaks reports, payroll exports, and compliance filings, and it is very hard to find by browsing profiles one at a time.
-
Retirement Risk Analysis - identify where age and tenure profiles suggest upcoming departures, so succession planning starts before a resignation letter arrives.
-
Broken Reporting Line Analysis - find employees with missing, circular, or orphaned supervisors. Broken reporting lines are one of the most common causes of approval workflows silently stalling; when a leave request has nowhere to go, it usually traces back to this.
If you have ever asked "how clean is our employee data, really?", this gives you an answer without a data project.
Help Portal Agent
Citra can now pull from the existing OrangeHRM Help Portal articles and answer product questions directly. Instead of leaving the system to search documentation, an admin configuring a module can ask how something works and get an answer grounded in the official help content.
The practical effect is on your internal support load. A large share of the questions HR admins field are not policy questions, they are "how do I do this in the system" questions. Those can now be answered in place.
Attendance Exceptions
Citra's attendance compliance tracking now covers early departure and excess work duration alongside its existing checks. Early departures and excessive hours are both compliance signals: one can indicate a scheduling or engagement problem, the other can indicate a working-time regulation risk. Having both tracked automatically means these surface as patterns rather than as one-off complaints.
OrangeHRM MCP support
This is the most technically significant addition in the release. MCP support lets you access OrangeHRM through public chat agents such as Claude and ChatGPT.
In practical terms, an authorised user can work with OrangeHRM data from inside the AI assistant they already use, rather than switching into the HR system for every question. For HR teams that already run analysis in an AI tool, this removes the copy-paste step between the two. For IT teams, it opens up scripted and conversational access patterns that previously required custom API work.
Introducing Performance Core
Performance Core is new in 8.2. It gives organizations a structured review capability without requiring the full Performance Pro appraisal cycle, useful if your process is lighter, or if you are rolling out formal reviews for the first time.
Building Review Templates
-
Admins can create, update, and delete review templates, with authorisation controls over which templates can be edited.
-
Questions support a rating answer type, and the rating labels are customisable, so your scale can use your organization's language ("Exceeds expectations", "On track") rather than generic numbers.
Running Reviews
-
Admins can create and view performance reviews and delete them when needed.
-
Manager selection logic is configured per template, so different review types can route to different evaluators. A probation review and an annual review do not have to follow the same reporting path.
-
The New Hire Probation Review Plan includes activation control and manager evaluator fallback handling. The fallback matters more than it sounds: probation reviews are time-sensitive, and if the assigned manager has left or changed, the review needs somewhere to go rather than sitting unassigned past the probation end date.
Finding People
-
The Performance Reviews screen supports both quick employee search and detailed employee search, which becomes essential once you are running reviews across hundreds of employees rather than a single team.
Audit Trail
-
Performance Core includes a full audit trail. Performance data is among the most likely HR data to be challenged after the fact, in an internal grievance, a promotion dispute, or an employment tribunal. A record of who changed what, and when, is what makes the process defensible.
Performance
Performance gains a set of enhancements in 8.2, focused on making appraisal templates more flexible and cycle setup faster at scale.
Appraisal Templates and Cycles
-
Support for various question types in appraisals. Appraisal forms are no longer limited to open-ended questions, it now supports question types with predefined answers, such as multiple-choice and single-choice, so you can mix rating scales with open comment fields and other types within one template.
-
Filter custom competencies into the appraisal template only the competencies relevant to that role or template appear, instead of the full library.
-
Add or skip the IDP as a section in the appraisal template. Individual Development Plans are valuable, but not every review cycle needs one. A quarterly check-in and an annual development review can now use the same module with different structures.
Cycle Setup at Scale
-
Select over 100 employees for an appraisal cycle. Previously, when selecting employees for the appraisal cycle, you could select a maximum of 100 employees at a time. After selecting the first 100, you needed to move to the next page in the list to select the remaining employees for the cycle.
-
Simplified employee selection using joined-date filtering. Set up a cycle for everyone who joined within a given window, rather than selecting them individually. This is exactly the filter you need for cohort-based probation and anniversary reviews.
Goals and Notifications
-
Goal weightage now defaults to a 1–100 scale, matching how most organizations already think about goal weighting.
-
The appraisal-completed notification now includes the final rating, so managers and employees see the outcome in the notification itself instead of having to open the appraisal to find it.
Attendance
The biggest theme in Attendance for 8.2 is that exceptions are no longer just flags, they now feed into pay policies, appear in action queues, and can be exported.
New Exception Rules
Three new exception types ship in this release:
-
Work on a non-working day
-
Early arrival
-
Late departure
Together with the existing rules, this covers most of the situations where actual attendance diverges from the schedule in a way that carries a cost or a compliance implication.
Exceptions Become Actionable
-
My Action Widget for Exceptions - exceptions now appear in the action queue rather than waiting to be discovered during a review of the attendance sheet. Exceptions found before payroll cut-off are a correction; exceptions found afterwards are a payroll adjustment.
-
Linking Exceptions with Pay Policies - this is the change that makes the rest of it matter. An early arrival or a shift worked on a non-working day can carry a defined pay treatment automatically, instead of relying on a manager to remember the rule.
-
Export Ability for Exceptions - for audit, payroll handover, or analysis outside the system.
Pay Policy Management
-
Manual pay policy assignment for employees, for cases that fall outside the standard assignment rules.
Transparency on Attendance Records
-
An edited icon appears on modified attendance records.
-
A rounded-off icon appears on records adjusted by rounding rules.
These two small additions solve a recurring source of employee disputes. When someone's recorded hours differ from what they remember working, the question is always "was this changed, and by what?" The icons answer that on the record itself.
Approval Controls
-
Attendance sheet approval restrictions for unpublished rosters and unapproved leaves. The system now prevents approval of attendance sheets while the underlying roster is still unpublished or related leave requests are still pending. This stops the most common sequencing error in attendance approval, where a sheet is signed off against a schedule that later changes.
Reporting
-
Pay code type grouping (tagging), with pay code groups displayed within cross-module reports. Instead of reading long lists of individual pay codes, you can group them, overtime, premium, allowance, and report at that level.
Roster
Reporting Gets Substantially Stronger
-
Advanced grouping with chart generation, roster reports can now be grouped and visualised directly, rather than exported and charted elsewhere.
-
Filtering by aggregate values, plus CSV and PDF exports from grouped reports. Filtering on aggregates is the useful part here: you can ask for locations where total scheduled hours exceed a threshold, rather than reading every location's total and comparing manually.
Multi-Location Operations
-
Visibility, full shift management, and governance in the multi-location view, managers responsible for more than one site can now manage shifts across all of them from a single view, with governance controls over what each role can do.
-
Select employees from multiple locations when assigning shifts, essential when staff cover more than one site, which is normal in retail, hospitality, healthcare, and facilities operations.
Scheduling Rules and Integrity
-
Copy Weekly Schedule now enforces shift creation rules and role-based behaviour. Copying a week forward is the fastest way to build a roster and historically the easiest way to bypass the rules that protect it. This closes that gap.
-
Shift type validity is enforced on shift group change, based on the "Modify Shift Times" setting.
-
Active employment period enforcement, shifts cannot be assigned to employees outside their active employment dates, which prevents scheduling someone who has left or has not yet started.
Communication and Accountability
-
Enhancements in shift publishing and notifications, employees are informed more reliably when schedules change.
-
Audit trail for shift swaps, a record of who swapped with whom, and who approved it. Shift swaps are frequently disputed after the fact; now there is a record.
-
Enhancements in shift group display and reporting.
Employee Management
-
Directory visibility can be configured per user role. Not every organization wants every employee to see every colleague's directory entry. Visibility is now a configuration decision rather than an all-or-nothing setting.
-
Ability to configure LATAM naming format, organizations can set how employee names are displayed to match local convention and internal standards.
-
Custom tab enhancements, including filtering in custom tabs with multi-value data and date range filtering for date custom fields. If you have built custom tabs to hold organization-specific data, these make that data searchable rather than just stored. Date range filtering in particular turns custom date fields, certification expiry, contract end, visa renewal, into something you can proactively report on.
Request Desk
Employee Management request types now support updating multiple sections in a single request. A change that touches job and salary together, a promotion, for example, used to require separate requests with separate approvals. It is now one form, one approval, one record.
This reflects how these changes actually happen. A promotion is a single decision, and splitting it across multiple approval chains creates a window where the two halves are out of sync.
App Builder
App Builder moves from being a form builder to being a small application platform.
-
Reporting - Build, filter, and export reports (CSV, Excel, PDF) that combine form data with employee information. This is the significant one: data captured in a custom app can now be analysed alongside core HR data rather than sitting in isolation.
-
Automatic Reminder Notifications - Follow up on pending requests until action is taken. Custom workflows stall when nobody chases them; this removes the chasing.
-
Data Group Permissions - Control who can configure apps by granting configuration access to IT teams or designated admin users.
-
Usability Improvements - Enhanced the overall App Builder experience with:
-
-
A dedicated Status column in lists and reports.
-
Dates displayed in each user's local date format.
-
An increased character limit for text area fields.
-
Clearer token selection for PIM and form field placeholders when configuring actions and templates.
-
Power BI
For teams doing HR analytics in Power BI, 8.2 substantially widens what is available:
-
New views for Emergency Contacts, Immigration, Memberships, Work Experience, Education, Skills, Languages, and Licenses, along with improvements to the Employee view. Skills, education, licenses, and languages are the datasets you need for capability mapping and skills-gap analysis, and immigration and license data are what compliance reporting depends on.
-
An improved organizational hierarchy view and a new view for updated job custom field values.
Mobile app
The mobile app closes several gaps with the web application in this release.
Attendance
-
Switch between employee attendance sheets directly from the Attendance Summary screen. Managers reviewing a team no longer have to navigate back and forth per employee.
-
Edited and rounded-off indicators on attendance sheets, matching the web behaviour.
-
Attendance sheet approval exceptions, the mobile app now handles the same approval-restriction conditions for unpublished shifts and unapproved leaves.
Leave
-
Add nominees in leave.
Roster
-
View full shift swap details, holidays displayed separately on the Team Roster, and shift type labels shown on roster shift cards.
Employee Management
-
Support for LATAM name formatting conventions, proper handling of compound surnames, which matters for correctness and for how employees see their own names represented.
-
PIM standard tabs, view Memberships, Direct Deposits, and Social Media on mobile.
Citra
-
Citra chat history, access and resume previous Citra conversations from a new History tab, so an unfinished request does not have to be restarted.
-
Module-wise prompt suggestions, contextual suggestions for what to ask, based on the module you are in. This addresses the most common problem with any AI assistant: knowing what it can actually do.
Conclusion
The OrangeHRM 8.2 release represents a decisive step toward a workplace where HR data does not simply sit in the system, but actively tells you what needs attention. By pairing Citra's new analytical abilities with a structured performance framework and an attendance engine that connects exceptions directly to pay, this update gives organizations the foundation to move from recording what happened to understanding why it happened. Whether it is through the broader reporting reach of Power BI, the governance controls now available across multi-location rosters, or the convenience of managing approvals and shift swaps from a mobile device, 8.2 ensures that every level of the organization is equipped to act on what it sees.
As businesses continue to navigate rising compliance demands and increasingly distributed teams, the value of an integrated, intelligent system becomes impossible to ignore. This release does not just add capability; it removes the manual reconciliation that has long stood between HR teams and the decisions they are meant to be making. With the OrangeHRM 8.2 release, workforce management is no longer about maintaining records after the fact; it is about surfacing the right insight at the moment it still makes a difference.
